Capt. Dylan Hubbard here with another update from the beautiful waters surrounding John’s Pass, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, Shell Key, Fort De Soto, Egmont Key, and the greater Tampa Bay area. While many of our local wildlife patterns remain consistent this time of year, there are some exciting seasonal transitions happening that make every trip on the water a little different than the last.
One of the biggest changes we continue to watch unfold is the rapid development of this year’s dolphin calves. Earlier in the spring we were celebrating the arrival of several newborn dolphins, and now many of those young calves are beginning to show more independence every week.
Guests aboard our Dolphin Watching Nature Cruise & Eco Tour have been witnessing fascinating behaviors as these younger dolphins spend more time interacting with other members of their pods. It is common to watch juvenile dolphins chasing baitfish, practicing hunting techniques, and learning important social behaviors from older dolphins. These lessons are critical for their development, and it is always incredible to witness these family dynamics play out in the wild.
The local bird nesting islands are also entering a new phase of the season. The spring nesting rush is winding down as many young birds leave the safety of their nests and begin exploring the surrounding waters. Guests cruising through Boca Ciega Bay regularly spot juvenile pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, and other coastal birds testing their flying skills and learning to forage successfully on their own.
Manatee activity also remains strong throughout the area. Warmer water temperatures have encouraged more manatees to return to the passes, grass flats, and back bay waters of Boca Ciega Bay. Many guests are pleasantly surprised by how frequently these gentle giants appear during our sightseeing cruises, making every trip a unique wildlife adventure.
Summer continues to provide spectacular evenings on the water, making this one of the best times of year to join us for a sunset cruise. Warm Gulf breezes, calm seas, and brilliant sunsets combine to create an unforgettable experience along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Our recent cruises have featured breathtaking skies painted with vibrant shades of orange, pink, purple, and gold. Dolphins frequently make an appearance as they feed along the beaches during the cooler evening hours, while seabirds begin settling in for the night across the nearby islands.
Watching the sun slowly disappear beneath the Gulf of Mexico while dolphins surface nearby is a truly memorable way to experience Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, and John’s Pass.
Royal Conquest Pirate SHip
Our Family Fun Pirate Ship Adventure continues to create unforgettable memories for families visiting John’s Pass. Every voyage is packed with excitement as our pirate crew leads guests through treasure hunts, pirate stories, sword fights, dancing, and thrilling water cannon battles.
Beyond the pirate fun, guests often enjoy unexpected wildlife encounters while cruising the protected waters around Madeira Beach and Treasure Island. Dolphins, seabirds, and even manatees regularly make appearances, making every pirate adventure a unique experience where you never know what surprises await around the next bend.
Shell Key, Egmont Key & Island Adventures
Egmont Key continues to offer one of the most unique island experiences along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Combining rich history, incredible wildlife, beautiful beaches, snorkeling opportunities, and the historic lighthouse, every visit provides something new to discover.
Sea turtle nesting season remains active around the island, with guests frequently spotting nesting activity along the beaches and turtles swimming through the surrounding waters. Warmer summer temperatures have also brought increased manatee activity throughout the nearby passes and grass flats.
Whether you’re exploring the historic fort ruins, relaxing on the beach, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or simply enjoying the abundant wildlife, Egmont Key remains one of Tampa Bay’s most rewarding island destinations.
Shell Key continues to be one of the premier destinations for shelling, wildlife viewing, and relaxing on pristine Florida beaches. Every trip offers new discoveries as tides, weather patterns, and seasonal changes constantly reshape the shoreline.
Sea turtle nesting season remains one of the biggest stories around Shell Key. Guests regularly observe signs of nesting activity while learning about the importance of protecting these incredible marine reptiles. During calmer weather, sea turtle sightings in the surrounding waters have become increasingly common as females continue their seasonal visits to the beaches.
Shell Key also offers excellent opportunities to search for unique shells, sand dollars, and other coastal treasures while enjoying one of the most beautiful undeveloped barrier islands on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Manatees are also making frequent appearances around the island, adding another unforgettable wildlife encounter to many shelling adventures.
