Hubbard’s Marina Cruise News 7-25-26

We have another in depth update from the beautiful waters surrounding John’s Pass, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, Boca Ciega Bay, Shell Key, Fort De Soto, Egmont Key, and the western shoreline of Tampa Bay. Every week on the water brings something a little different, and this past week has been a fascinating reminder of how interconnected our local marine ecosystem really is. From changing predator patterns to abundant wildlife and beautiful summer scenery, there has been no shortage of incredible experiences for guests aboard our Dolphin Watching Nature Cruise and Eco Tour, Shell Key shelling trips, Shell Key Ferry, Egmont Key Ferry, family fun pirate ship cruises, and our relaxing sunset cruises with complimentary beer and wine. 

One of the more interesting wildlife patterns we’ve observed recently has been a noticeable shift in our local dolphin behavior. Dolphin sightings have still been plentiful, but the dolphins have been much more scattered than usual. The biggest reason appears to be the unusually high number of bull sharks moving throughout Boca Ciega Bay, John’s Pass, and the surrounding coastal waters. Bull sharks naturally become more active during the warmer summer months, and lately we’ve encountered quite a few cruising our local bays and passes. As a result, many of our resident bottlenose dolphins have adjusted their daily routines, spending more time tucked back into shallow canals, protected coves, and quieter backwater areas where the larger sharks are less likely to venture. It has been fascinating to watch these intelligent marine mammals adapt their behavior to changing conditions while continuing to hunt, socialize, and raise their calves. 

Sea turtle nesting season continues to be one of the biggest highlights around Shell Key, Egmont Key, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, and St. Pete Beach. The beaches are now lined with active sea turtle nests, making this one of the most exciting times of year to visit our barrier islands. Guests traveling aboard our island ferry boats and shelling excursions have been learning about the nesting process while also spotting adult sea turtles swimming through the surrounding waters. Every successful nest represents another generation of these incredible animals, and we encourage everyone visiting our local beaches to remain aware of marked nesting areas and help protect these important habitats. 

Our local bird populations are also putting on quite a show. The nesting islands throughout Boca Ciega Bay remain full of activity as juvenile birds continue developing their flying and fishing skills. Pelicans, egrets, herons, cormorants, terns, anhingas, and osprey have all been providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities during our dolphin tours and island cruises. Many of the young birds are now leaving the nests and beginning to forage alongside the adults, creating plenty of entertaining aerial displays and feeding activity throughout the day. 

One of the biggest surprises this week came aboard our family fun pirate ship adventure. While cruising the protected waters near John’s Pass, guests were treated to an incredible encounter with a large group of manatees moving slowly through the bay. The recent influx of freshwater from seasonal rains has encouraged more manatees to spread throughout the area, feeding along the grass flats and exploring the sheltered backwaters. These gentle giants are becoming increasingly common throughout Boca Ciega Bay, and every sighting provides an unforgettable experience for both children and adults alike.
