Capt. Dylan Hubbard here with another update from the beautiful waters surrounding John’s Pass, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, Shell Key, Fort De Soto, Egmont Key, and the greater Tampa Bay area. While many of our local wildlife patterns remain consistent this time of year, there are some exciting seasonal transitions happening that make every trip on the water a little different than the last.
One of the most exciting developments on our local waters right now is the rapid growth of this year’s dolphin calves. Earlier in the spring we celebrated the arrival of several newborn dolphins, and now many of those young calves are becoming more independent each week. Guests aboard our Dolphin Watching Nature Cruise and Eco Tour have been treated to incredible sightings of juvenile dolphins interacting with their pods, chasing baitfish, practicing hunting techniques, and learning important social behaviors from older dolphins.
These early life lessons are critical for their development and provide guests with a rare opportunity to witness the complex family dynamics of wild bottlenose dolphins. Every trip offers unique encounters, making summer one of the best times of year to experience dolphin watching around Madeira Beach, John’s Pass, and Boca Ciega Bay.
The local bird nesting islands are entering an exciting new phase of the season as many of the young birds hatched earlier this year begin leaving their nests. Throughout Boca Ciega Bay, guests are spotting juvenile pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, and other coastal birds testing their flying abilities and learning to forage on their own.
Each week brings more activity as these young birds gain confidence and explore the surrounding waters. Wildlife enthusiasts aboard our nature cruises and ferry trips continue to enjoy excellent birdwatching opportunities while observing the next generation of seabirds thrive along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Summer has been delivering some truly spectacular sunsets across the Gulf of Mexico. Guests aboard our sunset cruises have enjoyed vibrant evening skies filled with brilliant oranges, pinks, and purples as the sun sinks below the horizon. The cooler evening hours also bring increased wildlife activity, with dolphins frequently appearing along the beaches as they feed before nightfall.
There is something unforgettable about watching the sunset over the Gulf while dolphins surface nearby and seabirds settle in for the evening. Combined with complimentary beer and wine, these beautiful summer evenings continue to make our sunset cruises one of the most popular experiences in John’s Pass.
Royal Conquest Pirate SHip
Our family-fun pirate ship adventures continue to create unforgettable memories for families visiting John’s Pass. Young pirates and their crews enjoy treasure hunts, pirate stories, water gun battles, sword fights, and interactive entertainment while cruising the calm waters around Madeira Beach and Treasure Island.
No two voyages are exactly alike, and wildlife encounters often become part of the adventure. Guests frequently spot dolphins, seabirds, and other local marine life while enjoying a one-of-a-kind pirate experience on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Shell Key, Egmont Key & Island Adventures
Shell Key and Egmont Key continue to provide some of the best wildlife viewing and island exploration opportunities in the Tampa Bay area. Sea turtle nesting season remains in full swing, with active nests appearing along the beaches and increased sea turtle sightings in the surrounding waters. Guests traveling aboard our Shell Key Ferry and Egmont Key Ferry have enjoyed excellent opportunities to spot turtles, especially during calm weather conditions.
Wildlife Sightings & Nature Viewing
Manatee activity has also increased throughout Boca Ciega Bay as warmer waters encourage these gentle giants to return to local grass flats, passes, and back bays. Combined with excellent shelling opportunities, pristine beaches, snorkeling, rich history, and abundant wildlife, every island trip offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
