Hubbard’s Marina Fishing Report 8/26/16

Inshore- The bait is thick inside Johns Pass causing the game fish to get excited at the peak tidal times. This past week nearly every morning this large 3-4 block area of live bait has attracted large numbers of snook, redfish, and trout to be feeding on the bait. Captain Anthony on the HUB took advantage of this the other morning before a charter and caught a dozen nice snook one after another and as soon as the bait hit the water the snook were blasting the live pinfish or pigfish. The big black drum are also inside the pass feeding on crabs or large live shrimp. Tarpon are still around the pass but are becoming less and less populated as they are leaving the area. Trout are also still thick inside the pass on the dock lights at night and along the seagrass beds inside Johns Pass.

Near shore- The snapper bite is steady nearshore right now. The red grouper are finally starting to come into the near shore area too. They have stayed deeper than normal this past summer but seem to be moving in a little closer to shore than recently. This has allowed us to be doing better on the keeper red grouper on the ten hour trip. Also, great news lately is the large number of juvenile red grouper being seen throughout the near shore waters showing a strong fishery for the following years. Hogfish are now starting to be more prolific as well which is great news for the near shore area fisheries. Cobia are still hanging around the near shore area along with other pelagics. Sailfish and wahoo are also around the nearshore areas we have caught a handful the past few weeks.

Offshore- The offshore bite has been great recently. The pelagics are out in force lately including wahoo, mahi and sailfish too. We have been catching these fish on our long range charters and 39, 44 and 63 hour party boat trips. The most recent long range party boat trip was a 63 hour trip and we caught lots of nice wahoo and mahi. Plus, the recent long range charters have been spotting big sailfish around the boats lately as well. The gag grouper bite has been hot in the deeper offshore waters along the big ledges and hard rock bottom potholes. The recent summer time weather has allowed us to drift these large areas picking up countless nice grouper like the red grouper, gags and scamp. On the recent 63 hour we caught queen snapper, snowy grouper, scamp, yellowedge, barrel fish and more! This past weekend we had a 44 hour full moon trip that did very well on the mangroves, porgies, vermillion, yellowtail and others too. It’s a great time to go fishing in the offshore waters right now and the calm weather makes it easy to reach the deep water. Captain Jack’s dolphin corner

Manatee activity heavy at Egmont key lately this allows us to spot these beautiful marine mammals on the way too and from the beautiful Egmont Key island. If you would like to try a ride out to this pristine island paradise, check out this link: https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/egmont-key-ferry-cruise/

Besides the manatees being spotted frequently on the way to and from Egmont Key, were also often spotting loggerhead sea turtles as well since its sea turtle nesting season currently.

Another bonus to our Egmont key ferry trips lately has been the new born baby dolphin that has been hanging around the island. This means on the way to the island to do great shelling, exploring, swimming and even snorkeling you have a great opportunity to spot baby dolphins, manatees and even sea turtles! Come join us for a day of fun in the sun at Egmont Key Island.

On our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour through the beautiful back bay waters of Boca Ceiga bay we always spot dolphins, it’s actually guaranteed. However, lately we’ve been spotting a newly born baby dolphin. It’s late in the season for new born dolphins but this is a great bonus to this already enjoyable cruise for you and the family. To learn more about the cruise check out this link: https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/dolphin-watching-cruises/

The seabirds on Dog leg key, our local rookery, is a great part of our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour from Hubbard’s Marina. The seabirds recently gave birth to a large brood of baby birds. These birds are now juvenile seabirds and are starting to leave the nest for local hunting practice. It’s a great sight for our guests to see as a part of the dolphin cruise, hope you get to join us soon to see these young birds in action.

Local dolphins have started hunting along the seawalls more and more as the mullet run slowly starts up and the sheepshead return to our local seawalls. This is a beautiful sight especially when the dolphins catch a fish to play with their young. They play catch with these fish teaching their young how to hunt by throwing them the fish to practice their sonar location techniques.

We have some bad news to announce, unfortunately NOAA’s national marine fisheries has announced with very little notice that amberjack will NOT be reopening August first as they had promised and planned for. This means Jacks will not be open for harvest until January 2017. This is very sad news, but luckily grouper and snapper are still open and there’s plenty of fish to be caught out there still despite Jacks being closed down. Keep in mind that we have no control over these closures we just have to adjust to them as we are told. Due to the closure we have canceled the August 2nd 39 hour and changed the 12 hours on August 2nd and August 4th to 10 hours for grouper and snapper. Please, get involved and stand up for your rights to fish by joining the Fishing rights alliance (FRA) or the Coastal conservation association of Florida (CCA).

There’s not too many 39 hour trips left this year before the big boat goes into dry dock for some major upgrades and a full makeover! We have one more August 26th plus one earlier September. Then the Florida goes to dry dock before offering a few more 39 hours at the end of the year in November and December. To see a full list of our specialty trips, including the BRAND NEW trips we just added check out the specialty schedule at this link: https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/specialty-fishing-trip-schedule/
