Inshore Fishing Report
Hey, guys, It’s Captain Jason Prieto with Steady Action fishing Charters. Just giving you guys a quick little fishing report for the end of July, going into august. We’ve had a good catch and some juvenile tarpon and we’re also getting some snapper. Mangrove snapper fishing has been really good in Tampa Bay. So far, fishing continues to be good.
A lot of small snook and a few big ones as well on the post spawn summer spawn. I’m starting to see some schools of redfish showing up which is a good thing. That’s something that’s a little early. We saw school redfish the other day which was nice. And going into August and September, I would suspect that we’re going to get on some nice schools of redfish.
This time of year, we tend to slow down a little bit, but actually the fishing is really good. Some of the juvenile tarpon we have are just a blast!
We could use a little bit more rain. I’m on the south shore of Tampa Bay and we haven’t had hardly any rain down here. If we get the rain, we’ll start dumping out of the creeks and rivers. And it seems like the tarpon will tend to stack up a little bit more. There’s still some larger tarpon in the bay.
The forecast is looking great for a great fall. So if you guys would like to get on the water with us give us a call 8137379890. Go to the website steadyactionfishingcharters.com.
Nearshore Fishing Report
Hey guys, Captain Frank here, and hot water…that’s all I can say. Its been kind of hard to get the fish up in the box there.
We got a few nice red groupers. We had to throwback, unfortunately as you know, the season is what it is on those. But we got some lanes and vermilion. We got a few mahi mahi that were coming around on the surface and we had a couple rods ready for those and those were nice.
We got some strawberry groupers in there as well. And porgies. It’s kind of tough in the summertime, but you know, it is what it is. We’re doing the best we can with it. We’re trying to get out there as deep water as possible right now on these ten hour trips to pull it together. But it is a little more difficult, little more sporadic, but all in all, it’s still fishing and the weather’s great! t’s hot, but it’s nice out. So we’re not getting our butts kicked very often from those storms, but usually we’re able to get around those. But in all fishing has been decent, little bit tougher day today than average. But we’ll get up them time.Â
Offshore Fishing Report
Hey, guys, I’m captain James here at Hubbard’s Marina, one of the guys who runs the 39 hour trip.
We just came back in from a 39 hour, did really, really good on the mangroves night fishing, the past couple trips. I’ve been seeing some nice red grouper and stuff coming up. Unfortunately, they just closed and getting a nice mix of gags in there too but, they’re still out of season.
The Amberjack will be coming in season with the gags soon, so we’re really excited to go out there. We’re going to start fishing some big breaks, some rocks, some springs for the amberjack. If you’re fishing for them you’re going to want to have real nice big live bait. I like to free line them down there or you can take a knocker rig through like a 3 or 4 ounce lead and just slowly send it down. Let those bait swim down. Basically, whenever that line starts flying out, just flip it right forward and just hold on.
I’ve been seeing some pelagic lately, having some mahi and stuff swim up to the boat but have been tricky to catch. Maybe catch one or two here and there, but there are schools that are 50 to 100 of them, but they have just been a little bit picky. Some of the guys thought a couple wahoos here and there, a couple of tunas, lots of bonita, a few kingfish.Â
When we start fishing for Gags, you definitely want to make sure you’re using a little bit heavier tackle. You don’t want to break them off. You break them off. Basically, you can shut the whole bite down for everybody. But we have been seeing some nicer gags in that 20 to 25 plus pound range, yellowtail have been coming up really well, has also been seeing lots of scamp.
We have been getting on the red snapper pretty well. The past trip or two has been a little tough. The current has really been fighting us pretty hard during the day. I have been getting through it pretty well on the night bite fishing the harder bottom for the mangrove snapper, scamp, and strawberries mixed in there. But once we start pushing out fishing the shelly bottom, big potholes, the currents just been ripping, making it hard to fish, and really making everyone work hard at it.
Hey guys, Captain Will here just getting back from another 39 hr. We had a good mangrove bite throughout the night and we pushed offshore during the daytime and of course had a little bit of squally summertime weather and a little bit of current. That north south current has been prevailing for the last couple of weeks. Hopefully it’s slowing down. I’m going to be checking that out. But the day was okay. We had a couple of decent red snapper spots, but we just were challenge with the anchor on this trip with heavy currents and seas. But a real good mangrove bite, a decent red snapper bite in the morning afternoon got squally and it was tricky in the afternoon, but we put a nice catch together.
And how about amberjack seasoned? You ready for that? Yeah, we’re ready for jack season. I’ve seen a few around right now and I’m sure if you go there and target them they will be there. You’ll catch more when we start targeting them.. We’re catching a couple right now and a couple of real big ones up to 50 or 60 pounds.
The gags are still out there. I think as soon as we get a little more weather, they’ll be thicker. But we’re throwing back gags every trip right now and some of them are nice sized!!
