Snook fishing around the area continues to be on fire. We are seeing tons of snook around the passes at night and even during the day too. The beaches are packed with snook during the day cruising the troughs looking for live shrimp or soft plastics. Also, around the flats, mangroves, and structures of the bay plenty of fish around ready to eat for sure. They are ferocious feeders at the right time of day and tide. That is the biggest trick knowing when and where those fish will be feeding. They will be set up to ambush passing baits when waters are moving at points, pockets, and passes. They feed best around the solunars and when bait is present, I like to use the ‘smartfishingtides.com’ website to find out what day and time is best to target any inshore species.

Please make sure if your heading offshore that you know how to properly descend or properly vent your fish and how and why to do these methods. I cannot stress the importance of this enough and I need your help to spread this message across our fishery in the gulf! Especially during the warm summer months our deeper water fisheries beyond 90-100ft become super susceptible to this barotrauma issue and the longer those fish take to get to the surface and the longer they are at or above the surface will only exponentially increase the likelihood of severe and possibly fatal barotrauma effects.

Gag grouper fishing has been decent for the time of year. Normally, during the warm summer when gags first open, they can be tricky, but we have had great luck getting some nice fish out deep past 140-160 up to around 150ft of water. You get more and more chances at big gags once you get past 100-120ft of water but until you reach that cooler deep water you will not see the big boys stacked up on spots. As the water cools this late fall those fish will slowly work their way closer to shore making it even easier to find big gag grouper!

Red snapper has opened up on the federally permitted for hire charter boats and party boats across the Gulf of Mexico. This season is June first until end of the day August first. The private recreational red snapper season along the west coast of Florida for private recreational anglers on private boats (no consideration given for the trip) is June 11th until July 25th. For both seasons the limits are the same with a 16-inch minimum size limit and only two fish per person.
